At this year’s opening concert, we pay our own tribute to one of the great characters of American music – Ned Rorem who celebrates his 80th birthday this year. Rorem is best known as a song-writer with almost 400 to his name, but this concert redresses the balance with performances of some of his most beautiful instrumental works, heard next to music by this year’s two featured composers – Matthew Hindson and Stephen Montague.

Pianists Andrew Zolinsky and Isabel Ettenauer present an evening of the wacky, wonderful and occasionally just plain weird. Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata meets up with Schroeder from Peanuts, whilst Irish composer John Godfrey deconstructs an operatic aria with the help of six old cassette players. And Matthew Hindson has his own revenge – when a critic referred to his music as “having moments of plastic jubilation” he promptly took the words and used them as a title to one of his most energetic and foot-tapping pieces. There is also music by Louis Andriessen and a performance of thirteen new pieces for piano by Stephen Montague, played by pupils drawn from schools in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Isabel Ettenauer appears in association with BMIC Cutting Edge Tour 2003

And there’s a chance to hear what has become Matthew Hindson’s most popular piece - Chrissietina’s Magic Fantasy for two violins based on techno and death-metal, together with his Insect Songs which depict scurrying ants and the brief life of cicadas, devoted to singing and reproducing.

“I do like music to be exciting and interesting, to appeal directly to the emotions. I don’t beat about the bush.” In response to Matthew Hindson’s own views on music, the Vale of Glamorgan Festival are presenting an evening of Hindson’s own explosive pieces in the high-tech environment of British Airways Maintenance Centre at Wales International Airport, given by Cardiff-based Sinfonia Cymru and their conductor Gareth Jones.

The music ranges from The Rave and the Nightingale, which envisages what Schubert might sound like were he born two centuries later as DJ Franz writing techno-inspired electronica anthems for the clubs of Europe, through to the playful, up-beat and repetitive rhythms of Rush.

Due to security considerations, the performance at British Airways Maintenance Cardiff must be booked in advance as there will be no on-the-door sales on the night of the concert itself. Please book early to avoid disapointment

This event will include both promenading and seating - please state whether you wish to sit or stand when you book your ticket.

Concert by Candlelight

One of the brightest recent additions to the new music scene, Okeanos’ concert is given in the magical surroundings of the thirteenth century Ewenny Priory. From Australia there is the chiselled pulsating rhythms of Elena Kats-Chernin, the quiet meditative voice of Anne Boyd and the trance-like music of Matthew Hindson. From Britain there is music written specially for Okeanos by Lynne Plowman, the epigrammatic music of Howard Skempton and new works by Nigel Osborne and Paul Archbold.

Heard alongside recent pieces by Anthony Powers and David Sawer, Stephen Montague’s new concerto for flute and harp is inspired by dances from different world cultures – Eastern European in the first movement, Japanese in the second and closing with an Irish/American hornpipe! After his memorable recital at the 2000 Festival Gerard McCrystal returns to the Vale of Glamorgan Festival with a new version for orchestra of John Metcalf’s Mobiles. And there’s a recent orchestral work by Matthew Hindson: Speed – a meditation on the full gamut of post-modern life with all its ever-accelerating, all-senses-impacting, jolting sensation of rush.

Stanwell School’s new theatre space is a superb purpose-built theatre seating over 400 people, equipped with a spacious reception and café area – if you haven’t yet discovered one of the Vale’s best new venues, this is an ideal occasion to come along!
