This year’s outreach programme will reach young people from across the region in two ambitious and rewarding projects

Different Trains project

During the summer, composer Michael Parkin will visit schools to share music by Steve Reich (along with students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama), and – in an intensive week of workshops – help a group of school-age composers to create their own Different Trains-inspired composition.

This project culminates in the following performances, which promise to be inspirational. Do come along – it’ll cost you a train fare, at most!

Thursday 31 August, 12 noon
Cardiff Central Station, concourse
FREE PERFORMANCE

The young composers perform their own new work to a public audience at Cardiff Central Station; performers from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama perform music by Steve Reich.

Thursday 31 August, 1.41–2.37pm
ON THE RAILS – CARDIFF TO BRIDGEND

Students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama perform music by Steve Reich aboard the 1.41pm departure from Cardiff Central to Bridgend – calling at Grangetown, Cogan, Eastbrook, Dinas Powys, Cadoxton, Barry Docks, Barry, Rhoose CIA, Llantwit Major, and terminating at Bridgend at 2.37pm (call National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950 for full details of service).

Saturday 2 September, 1PM
Barry Waterfront Festival
FREE PERFORMANCE

The young composers and performers have another opportunity to perform to a public audience, next to the tall ship at the Barry Waterfront Festival.

The Different Trains project is sponsored by Arriva Trains Wales and supported by the National Lottery through the Arts Council of Wales
